Kevin gasped once more for breath before he fell forward. Edd leapt forward and caught him as he crashed to the ground. He lay Kevin down on the ground and pressed as hard as he could on the wound.
“No, no, no, no, no…” Edd was shaking his head in denial. His eyes were wide, and he was trembling. Dan was backing away, stunned by what he’d done, bloody knife in hand. He’d been wasted beyond belief for all his previous crimes. Now he was sober, and his victim lay dying, with all of supporters gone, and he was terrified. He screamed and ran from them, dropping the knife. It hit the ground with a clatter and flicked more blood on Edd’s face. He barely flinched as he tried to wrap his mind around the task at hand.
Keep on the pressure, keep Kevin awake, don’t panic. The absolute worst he could do for Kevin was panic. But it was happening anyway. He was shouting at Kevin to stay with him. Kevin was mouthing words without sound and coughing up blood.
